Best Subscription Platforms in 2026: Subbly vs Shopify vs Base44 vs Cratejoy vs WooCommerce Compared

After 20 years consulting subscription businesses across every major platform, here is my honest breakdown of what each one does well, where each one fails, and who each one is actually built for.

After twenty years consulting subscription businesses, I have worked inside nearly every platform that exists. I have helped founders launch on Subbly, migrate away from Cratejoy, build on Shopify, and in the last two years increasingly move to platforms like Base44 as the economics of AI-built websites started to change the conversation entirely.

This is not a sponsored review. No platform has paid me to say anything here. I am going to tell you exactly what each platform does well, where each one fails, and who each one is actually built for.

The Quick Verdict

Platform Best For Monthly Cost Subscription-Native Rating
Subbly Subscription box all-in-one $39–$119+ Yes 3.5/5
Shopify Established ecom brands $39–$399+ Via apps 3.5/5
Base44 Custom builds, tech-forward founders Low (AI-based) Via build 4.5/5
Cratejoy Absolute beginners, low volume Free–$39 Yes 2.5/5
WooCommerce WordPress users, full control $0 + hosting Via plugins 3/5
Squarespace Content-led, simple offers $23–$65+ Limited 2.5/5

Subbly: Powerful but With Real Costs You Need to Understand

💡

PRO TIP

Operators who track this metric consistently outgrow those who don't. Set up a simple dashboard to monitor this weekly.

Subbly was built specifically for subscription businesses, and that focus shows in genuinely useful places. Subscriber management, dunning tools, and checkout flow are solid. If you are running a subscription box and you want an all-in-one platform that handles subscriptions natively without stitching together five apps, Subbly makes a reasonable case.

What Subbly does well:

  • Native subscription management (no third-party app required)
  • Solid dunning and failed payment recovery tools
  • Built-in subscriber portal
  • Analytics that speak subscription language: MRR, churn, LTV

Where Subbly falls short:

The AI website builder is where things get complicated. Their builder runs in two modes: Normal and High Intelligence. Normal mode is unreliable — it misinterprets instructions and makes unwanted changes. High Intelligence mode works better but the cost model is opaque. Simple edits (three button links, one deleted block) have cost users $6–$15 per prompt. For a subscription business that needs to iterate on landing pages regularly, those costs compound fast and add up to hundreds of dollars per month on top of your platform fee.

The real cost question to ask Subbly before you sign up:

How much will it cost me to make routine website changes every month? Get a real answer before you commit.

Shopify: The Safe Bet That Is Not Subscription-Native

Shopify is not built for subscriptions. It is built for e-commerce. Subscription functionality comes through apps like Recharge, Skio, Bold, or Seal — which add $50–$300/month on top of your Shopify fee. At lower tiers, transaction fees also eat into subscription margins.

Who Shopify is right for: Brands already on Shopify adding subscriptions, businesses selling a mix of one-time and recurring products, anyone who needs the widest possible app ecosystem.

Who should look elsewhere: Pure subscription box businesses, lean early-stage founders, anyone for whom platform plus subscription app fees will be significant relative to MRR.

Base44: The Platform Changing the Economics

🎯

ACTION STEP

Block 30 minutes this week to implement this in your business. Small improvements here compound significantly over 12 months.

Base44 is an AI-native platform for building web applications and subscription sites. Rather than offering a template-based builder with subscriptions bolted on, it lets you build exactly what you need from a prompt — at substantially lower cost than platforms like Subbly's AI builder.

During a documented experiment: Subbly charged approximately $6 to change three button links. An entire subscription website built from scratch on Base44 cost approximately $2–3. That comparison is worth sitting with.

Who Base44 is right for: Tech-comfortable founders who want a custom build without agency costs, developers building for subscription clients, anyone frustrated by the cost and limitations of AI builders on legacy platforms.

Cratejoy: Fine for Starting, Not for Scaling

Cratejoy has a marketplace that can provide early organic discovery — that used to be its main selling point. In 2026 that marketplace traffic has diminished significantly and the platform has not kept pace with modern UX standards. I would not build a serious subscription business on Cratejoy from scratch today. Use it to validate a concept, then migrate.

WooCommerce, Squarespace and Wix

📌

KEY INSIGHT

The highest-performing subscription businesses revisit and optimise each of these areas on a quarterly cadence — not just at launch.

WooCommerce gives you maximum control if you know WordPress and have developer capacity. The maintenance overhead is real if you do not. Not recommended for solopreneurs managing everything themselves.

Squarespace and Wix have added subscription or membership functionality but neither is subscription-native. Use them for simple, low-volume recurring payments where design simplicity is the priority. Do not use them to build a real subscription business with churn management and subscriber analytics.

My Recommendation Framework

  • Launching a subscription box from scratch: Subbly (understanding its website builder costs) or Shopify + Recharge
  • Already on Shopify, adding subscriptions: Stay. Add Recharge or Skio.
  • Tech-comfortable founder wanting a custom build: Seriously evaluate Base44 — the economics are compelling
  • Testing an idea on minimal budget: Cratejoy marketplace, then migrate
  • Content-led membership business: Circle or Kajabi depending on your community/content mix

The Platform Is Not the Strategy

⚠️

COMMON MISTAKE

Most operators skip this step or do it reactively. Being proactive here is one of the clearest separators between businesses that compound and those that plateau.

The most common mistake I see: treating platform selection as the strategy. It is not. The platform is the car. You still need to know where you are going and how to drive.

I have seen businesses fail on Subbly that would have failed on Shopify too. Platform choice matters — but pricing strategy, retention architecture, and customer experience matter more.

What is the best subscription platform for beginners?

Subbly or Cratejoy for pure subscription box businesses. Shopify if you want broader e-commerce capability. Base44 if you have some technical comfort and want full customisation at lower cost.

Is Subbly worth it in 2026?

For subscription-native functionality, yes. The subscriber management tools are solid. The AI website builder has real cost issues for iterative editing. It is worth it if you understand those limitations going in.

What is cheaper for subscriptions: Subbly or Shopify?

Subbly is typically cheaper for pure subscription businesses. Shopify's base cost is comparable but the subscription app add-on adds $50–$300/month. For high-volume businesses, Shopify's economics can become more favourable.
